The Town of Orange Park was the brainchild of developer Washington Benedict and his Florida Winter Home Improvement Co and was founded in 1877. Following the Civil War, the company purchased several thousand acres of the McIntosh Plantation at Laurel Grove, for the purpose of creating a southern retreat and small farming community. The town was incorporated in 1879 by a special act of the Florida Legislature.
It’s true there were extensive groves at Orange Park until the freeze of 1895. A substantial pecan grove was planted by Clark, which still survives in the park on the north side of Kingsley. The name reflects the hope of its founders for a fruit-growing industry…Orange Park! Since then, Orange Park has grown much larger over the years and its new Town Hall built in 1995 is a tribute to the Town of Orange Park. Together it stands as an outstanding example of the character of residents and the farsightedness of those who call Orange Park home as they watch the growth from their own back yards.
